Featured in this auction series is a Russia 1708/7IL L Tynf graded NGC MS 65 (Session II, lot 2006), with a starting price of 85,000 PLN (about $21,000). The coin’s obverse displays a bust of Tsar Peter I in ceremonial armor with a cloak thrown over his shoulders and fastened with a decorative brooch, while the reverse shows a crowned double-headed imperial eagle and the signature IL-L (master of the Kadaszew Mint).

During the Great Northern War with Sweden, Peter I, for the purposes of settling accounts with the allied troops of Denmark, Norway, Saxony and Prussia, introduced a new type of coin called the Tynf. It was minted in the years 1707-1709 in the Kadashev Mint in three versions: with the letters IL-L, with the letters IL and without the letters — which were the signature of the mint master of the Kadashev Mint, I. Lang. In later years, the coins were withdrawn from circulation and almost all of them were melted down.
