NGC-certified Gold Pattern Realizes More than $600,000 in SINCONA Sale

A very rare British gold pattern that is certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) realized over $600,000 in a SINCONA sale. It was the top highlight among 500 NGC-certified coins offered May 15, 2023, in Part 4 of the phenomenal SINCONA British Collection.

The Great Britain 1820 Gold Pattern 5 Sovereign graded NGC PF 64★ Ultra Cameo (lot 1843) realized 552,000 CHF (about $616,000), which is the highest for any coin from the four auctions presented so far. The obverse of the coin shows King George III, who passed away after a 60-year reign just before the coin was minted. The reverse shows Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic design of St. George slaying the dragon. Only 25 examples of this coin are believed to have been struck, and this example is the finest in the NGC Census.

Another great rarity in the auction, this one from George III's grandfather, also commanded an impressive price. The Great Britain 1731 5 Guineas graded NGC PF 62 Cameo (lot 1743) realized 312,000 CHF (about $348,000). With George II on the obverse, the coin is an example of one of Great Britain's earliest Proof coins. It is one of only two examples in the NGC Census.

To enhance these stunning coins, NGC encapsulated them with a special label that combines the British flag and the Matterhorn, a Swiss mountain that represents the highest level of achievement. Through the first four auctions, 45 coins from the SINCONA British Collection have realized prices over $100,000 in auctions that started in November 2021. One additional sale is planned for October 2023.

• an England (1619-1620) Ryal graded NGC MS 61 (lot 1589), which realized 144,000 CHF (about $161,000)
• a Great Britain 1709 5 Guineas graded NGC AU 55 (lot 1714), which realized 132,000 CHF (about $147,000)
• an England (1592-95) Sovereign graded NGC MS 61 (lot 1575), which realized 120,000 CHF (about $134,000)
• an England (1377-1399) Noble graded NGC MS 66 (lot 1519), which realized 114,000 CHF (about $127,000)
• a 14-piece Great Britain 1831 Proof Set graded NGC PF 61 Cameo to NGC PF 66 Ultra Cameo (lot 1863), which realized 102,000 CHF (about $114,000)
• a Great Britain 1777 Gold Pattern 2 Guineas graded NGC PF 62 Ultra Cameo (lot 1799), which realized 102,000 CHF (about $114,000)
• an England 1676 5 Guineas graded NGC MS 61 (lot 1648), which realized 102,000 CHF (about $114,000)
• an England 1677 5 Guineas graded NGC MS 61 (lot 1652), which realized 90,000 CHF (about $100,000)
• an England 1656 Broad graded NGC PF 62 Cameo (lot 1634), which realized 90,000 CHF (about $100,000)
