Trio of NGC-certified Rare European Gold Coins Featured in Künker Sale

The January auction features hundreds of NGC-certified coins, including several from the ambitious Paramount Collection.

A trio of spectacular vintage gold coins that are certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company™ (NGC®) are featured in an upcoming Künker sale. These Central European coins are from the NGC-certified Paramount Collection, an ambitious group of prominent rarities. Online bidding for Auction 359 is underway and will conclude January 26, 2022.

Leading the sale is a Germany (1599-1633) Brunswick-Lüneburg 20 Ducats graded NGC AU 55. The coin’s obverse features Christian, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, a territory within the Holy Roman Empire, charging in full armor on his horse. The reverse displays a detailed coat of arms of Minden, another territory of the Holy Roman Empire in northwest Germany of which Christian was the administrator. This rarity (lot 450) has an estimate of €300,000 (about $340,000).

Also featured in the sale is a coin that was struck a decade after the Thirty Years’ War. The Austria 1657 Breslau 10 Ducats graded NGC MS 62 dates to the end of the reign of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III, whose portrait is on the obverse. After ascending to the throne in 1637, Ferdinand III participated in a collection of peace treaties to end the Thirty Years’ War. This coin (lot 625) has an estimate of €150,000 (about $170,000).

Meanwhile, the sale includes another fascinating gold coin, one that depicts Saint Leodegar (circa 615-679 A.D.). The Switzerland 1714 Lucerne 10 Ducats graded NGC MS 62 (lot 757) is one out of two in the NGC Census. This rarity has an estimate of €100,000 (about $113,200).

  • a France 1640A 8 Louis d’Or graded NGC AU 50 (lot 671), with an estimate of €100,000 (about $113,200)
  • a Hungary 1605 Transylvania 10 Ducats Bust with Cap graded NGC AU 55 (lot 793), with an estimate of €100,000 (about $113,200)
  • a Great Britain 1839 Una and the Lion 5 Sovereign graded NGC Proof Details (lot 683), with an estimate of €80,000 (about $90,500)
  • a Sweden 1700-Dated Seige of Tonning Gold Medal graded NGC MS 62 and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 668), with an estimate of €50,000 (about $56,500)
  • an Italy 1686 Retegno 10 Zecchini graded NGC AU Details and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 692), with an estimate of €50,000 (about $56,000)
  • a Switzerland (1700-10) Bern 6 Ducats graded NGC MS 63+ PL and pedigreed to the Paramount Collection (lot 753), with an estimate of €50,000 (about $56,000)
  • a Germany 1698 Nurnberg 6 Ducats graded NGC MS 60 (lot 527), with an estimate of €40,000 (about $45,200)
